Kosher treats of my youth included things like Entenmann’s Pop’ems (donut holes), Little Debbie snack cakes, and Stella Doro Swiss Fudge cookies. They weren’t particularly healthy nor were they what we now might call eco-Kosher but we have come a long way since then. The Kosher food served at my son’s Orthodox preschool was almost always Organic and the day school he now attends has a zero-waste lunch day weekly.

I’m a mother of a five year old, and living in Berkeley, I’m surrounded by people who spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about what they put in their children’s bellies. So for Purim, it seemed like a no-brainer when the parents at our Jewish preschool decided to buck the trend, ditch the cheap candy, and put together a Purim basket that was both tasty and responsible.
